Another Smurfin' Wolfie Tribute!

Presenting a Peyo Parody for your peekin' pleasure!

(Credit where credit is due-- Larken came up with theColor Smurfle. She says that's what happens when a blue bottom gets reddened! I hadn't thought of that, but decided it must be true and fixed my cartoon accordingly.)

But, wait!  That's not all! You also get in this entry, at no additional charge, the link to Phil's spankin' new blog, OVERBARREL'S SPANKING TOONS!  Treats await you when you click on those blue letters like THIS:

Phil's busy moving all of his Poser Work away from the Yahiccup Groups into Blogger where it is so much easier for everyone to see and enjoy,  so go have a look!

Oh, and have you seen the latest free samples at "DISCIPLINE & DESIRE?"
That's worth a click, too!

Swipes!

(Bullwinkle Voice) Hello, Culture Lovers!

In comic art, a "swipe" is a drawing that has been directly copied from another (and usually better) artist and presented as one's own.  That's different from a "tribute" or "pastiche." "Swipes" were pretty common practice in the 30's, when comic books were new, but a surprising amount of it still goes on today!

Now, if I were to present this:

a lot of people would recognize it as a famous bit of "Flash Gordon" work by Alex Raymond.

But, a lot of people wouldn't, and would say, "Dayam, that Wolfie can draw!"

Thank you, thank you.

An awful lot of people have swiped Alex Raymond's work, because he was a superior artist and frequently used live models.

He even gave lessons on drawing Nekkid Girls in Proper Perspective.

Another guy whose work was lovingly copied to save time and get a nice paycheck was Hal Foster, whose "Prince Valiant" was royal comic strip art.

Hal also did the "Tarzan" newspaper strip for a while in the 30's.

A fellow named Bob Kane was a big admirer.

That final dramatic panel, and just about every other panel in the origin story featured in "Batman" #1 in 1940, was a Swipe!

(Bob earned a very bad reputation as a Pilferer, of both art and credit.  Hardly any of the "Batman" artwork with the big "BOB KANE" signature box through the years was his, and almost all of the writing was done by Bob's fairly silent partner, and Batman's unsung co-creator, Bill Finger.  But I digress.)

Now, everybody learns by copying at first.  This "Hawkman" page from "Flash Comics" #5 in 1940 is full of "Flash Gordon" swipes by artist Sheldon Moldoff.  As a matter of fact, the first artist for this feature, Dennis Neville, got the look for his hero from the Hawkmen in "Flash Gordon."

The third artist for "Hawkman" was a young fellow named Joe Kubert, who not only became one of the greats with features like "Sergeant Rock" and a revised "Hawkman," but who began the Kubert School for Cartooning and Graphic Arts.

Kubert told his students that when you copy another artist, you will exaggerate his exaggerations, especially if it turns out you're copying someone else's copy, and the result will be severe and probably unattractive distortion.  He recommended lots of drawing from life, or at least using photographs.

Say, I wonder how many pole-vaulters, runners, skating stars and boxers from the newspapers and magazines have wound up with Crime Fighting Doppelgangers in the funny books?

(Zooming off)

(Putting Evil Doers In Place)

Okay, now-- remember that Dick Williams magazine illustration?

Boom, of "OTKatie" fame, pointed out IN THIS POST at "The Chicago Spanking Review" forum the similarity between it and this poster for a 1947 movie with Fred MacMurray and Paulette Goddard called "Suddenly Last Spring!" Have a look!

The movie is a wacky post-war will-they-divorce-or-get-back-together romantic comedy and has no actual spankage.  But what a dandy Publicity Shot!!

(Spanking Makes Happy Couples.)

Hey, come to think of it, those two have some other Movie Spanking to their credit!

Paulette got an on-screen spanking from Ray Milland in "Reap The Wild Wind!"

("Mr. DeMille, can we please do that scene again?  Thaaaaank you!!")

John Wayne was in that picture, too, if ya wanna play "Six Degrees of Spanking Separation."

In the 1944 movie "And The Angels Sing," Fred MacMurray and his pals spank the Angel Sisters-- that is, Dorothy Lamour, Betty Hutton, Diana Lynn and Mimi Chandler!   I've been fighting with Blogger to embed Chross's YouTube clip here, but the smurf-smurfin' thing will not cooperate, so you'll have to click on the blue letters here to see

THE CLIP!

Anyway, what do you think?  Dick Williams was a fine artist, so did he "merely" use Fred and Paulette as "models," with some kind of permission, or did he actually "swipe" that publicity shot?  Maybe such things were considered "public domain?" It would help if we knew from whence came the illustration!

Well, The World May Never Know.  But at least in this post I got to do something with / to that Flash Gordon pic that's been screaming to me for Spanking Reinterpretation for forty-two years.

Ice Say!

Let's celebrate the Winter Olympics with an eight-year-old WolfieToon from "DISCIPLINE & DESIRE!"

Which puts me in mind of the rhyme-- I'm sure I heard it somewhere before Major Freedman said it on "M*A*S*H"--

"Ladies and Gentleman
Take my advice
pull down your pants
and slide on the ice!"

(Thanks to "Gilligan" and his "Miniskirt Mondays" at "RETROSPACE!" )

Now for other cheap thrills, and maybe not so cheap, I have Recommended Reading:

Kaki's story "A Lesson Learned"over HERE at Devlin O'Neill's blog!  I give it my highest "H&H" rating!  ("Hilarity and Horniness!")

That anxious moment between knowing it's going to happen and the first firm, resounding smack on a delectable derriere-- which could last a few seconds, a few minutes, a few hours, or even a few days!-- I am calling "Spankticipation."

There has been a lot written about this moment of delicious suspense, and it's one of the key features in Phil's new cartoon series starting up at  "OVERBARREL'S SPANKING TOONS!"

Below are samples I've culled from nine years' of WolfieToons at "DISCIPLINE & DESIRE"--  enjoy!

On My Way To Curmudgeonhood

Yes, I was born fifty-eight years ago today and have begun practicing for all the Ol' Coot Roles:

Curmudgeons are a vital and valuable part of Society,

and although one doesn't have to be a Geezer to be a Curmudgeon,

it tends to be more common.

So now I'll do Character Roles,

but in my heart I still play the Lead.

I'm sure every Imp thinks of me that way, too, yes?

Well, then, I wonder how they do view me?

(Those, by the way, are 'toons Brandy Golden asked me to do for the Western-themed Yahoo Group "Bratsville, Spankville County" a bunch of years ago.)

So, all right, I'll play the Crusty But Lovable Ol' Coot you encounter out and about.

Watch yourself.

Happy Spring Break!!

Here's a post to celebrate the arrival of beachier weather and a vacation from all your diligent study and hard work!

And if you've already had your Spring Break, too bad, suck it up and get that paper done.

And enjoy these images!

Here's a re-colored version of one of the first cartoons I put on the InterWebs:

And a very early WolfieToon from "DISCIPLINE & DESIRE!"

Hey!  WHO spanked these little bottoms?  The victims try to find the culprit.

(Bet it was that gal in the red shorts.)

And now, with appreciation, Beach and Bikini Frolic from around the Web:

Spanking Preparation.

Of course, that could just be a royal wedgie.  Like this:

Dayam.

Now, you better have finished those chores before you think you can traipse off to the shore:

But when you and Ma are done, we'll be waiting for you:

Some of our favorite friends will be there, too!  (Thanks, Guys and Dolls!!)

I believe this gal is being punished for the unfortunate color job.
I'm just kidding, it's lovely.  Ahem.

Yes, I bet it is.

So whether you sneak off for some private groping and thwacking--

--or you like to be thick in the middle of everyone--

--enjoy your Spring Break!!

Easter Buns!

Speaking of the Seventies--

--does anyone else remember the photo from "People" magazine of teenager Susan Ford being playfully spanked by her brother?

I think it was "People;" it was a relatively new rag then.  The article was about the presidential kids when Gerry Ford was in office, and probably sometime in '75 or '76.

The photo showed one of her brothers (I don't remember which) holding her around the waist, her face toward the camera,  while he took a whack or several at the seat of her trousers.  The caption was something like,"Susan yowls as (Whatzisname) administers a brotherly spanking."

It was pretty cute, but I've never seen that picture on the Interwebs.  And I've looked.  Found other Ford Family photos, and now you're seeing them, too.

Here's a recent one of Susan.

Anyway, if you run across it, sing out.

And meanwhile, speaking of the Seventies:

(I'm pretty sure that was taken with a Kodak Instamatic with the Flash Cube on top.)

Tonight's ABC Family Movie--

I'll rerun these sketches:

This may be a WolfieBlog Summer Rerun;  but if so, there'ssomebody hasn't seen it, so here's a "DISCIPLINE & DESIRE" cartoon from six hot summers ago:

The original lines, by the way, were:

"You gave Uncle Albert a heart attack!"

"I'm so sorry, Uncle Albert!"

But the Powers That Be said we hadda change it because that implied something incestuous.

Anyway, I thought it would be a good way to beak in the season here!

Spanking 'Toons by Flowers!

If the name Don Flowers is unfamiliar to you, allow me to introduce you to some of the finest, funniest, and sexiest cartoon work to ever grace a page.

(Nice Star Placement, eh?)

Mom's got polka dots, I bet.

Wotta klutz.  But, say, what a coincidence!  There's a bride's bottom featured in the current WolfieToon at  "DISCIPLINE & DESIRE,"  too-- only unclad!!

Back to Don's cuties:

Don's work appeared in newspapers for over forty years.  Beginning with "Puffy Pig" and "Oh, Diana!" in the thirties, he began a single-panel cartoon featuring funny, fab females called "Modest Maidens" for the Associated Press, which became such a hit that W.R. Hearst stole him away, doubling his salary and renaming his cartoon "Glamour Girls" for King Features Syndicate.

Hm, I was unjustly accused once.

Only the technology changes.

Don and his comic strip both ended in 1968.  He died of emphysema from years of smoking, and newspapers had been dropping "Glamour Girls" as the 60's became more turbulent.

At its peak, "Glamour Girls" ran in nearly 300 papers.  His stepson, Don Flowers, Jr., says his dad would amass a bunch of gags and then head to the drawing board, where he could do as many as a week's worth of panels in a single day.  The younger Don says his dad "never struggled, he never got frustrated, and he never said, 'I can't get this part right.' He always knew where he wanted a line to go."

(That, by the way, is the exact opposite of the Wolfie Experience.)

Don in his studio.

These examples have come from a collection called The Glamour Girls of Don Flowers by Alex Chun and Jacob Covey.  I recommend it!

On the Interweb, I found a "Glamour Girls" Sunday page (I think the date at the top says "1949") in which one of the gags is very much like something Endart or NIK ZULA or Dave Wolfe might've come up with.  That Wolfie character may even steal it yet.

I saved that a long time ago and forgot to note the source,  If you were the individual who photographed this in the wee hours, please let me give you credit and thanks!   Now, this is the best I can clear up the spanking for you.  The gag line reads, "Twenty-two, Twenty-three-- You thought I'd forgotten your birthday, didn't you?-- Twenty-four--!"

And now the climax:  a Don Flowers cartoon from the 60's that was sold on E-Bay recently.

Pop might be taking himself too seriously but you'll notice Mom isn't really interfering!

I don't know if there were other spankings in the twenty years or so of  "Glamour Girls," but if so, they;ll eventually crop up!  Hope you enjoyed all of these!

A great big ole howdy!  Hope my fellow Merkins had a wonderful weekend, whether reveling in some peace and quiet or spending spiffy summertime with family and friends, fireworks and yummy provender.  Hm, Yummy Provender sounds like a WolfieToon character.  In fact, she might be the Twirler in this first Fourth of July cartoon I did at "DISCIPLINE & DESIRE!"

Springrose mentioned the other night that I've become an expert at drawing delectable derrieres.

Well, I certainly have had a lot of practice, and keep trying to improve.  Fine fannies are a regular feature of the weekly WolfieToons at "DISCIPLINE & DESIRE!"  They are my favorite subject, attractive and funny at the same time.

Occasionally I remember to give the girls-- and, I guess, some guys-- a fair share of gluteal eye candy.

Butt-- what if a creative urge strikes someone who hasn't studied how to reproduce on paper these scintillating spheres, these hypnotic orbs of flesh?  No need to suffer feckless frustration now, my friend!  Behold the Butt Drawing Tutorial from YouTube!

Here are a couple more images from cartoonist DON FLOWERS!  No spanking, but there are stars and bottoms.  First, let's quote the Pythons:

Speaking of Mermaids and Spanking, did you ever see THIS?  It's worth a peek.

Cosplay!

That (mostly) black and white drawing is a detail from the "DISCIPLINE & DESIRE" WolfieToon titled, "Cosplay," done as a salute to Comic-Con International held in Sand Diego this past weekend!

One of the fun parts of any comic convention is the "Cosplay!"

If you're unfamiliar with the term "Cosplay," it's not about listening to Bill Cosby albums--

--although that's a very good idea.

"Cosplay" means "playing in costume," usually at parties and conventions.  If you'll YAHOO it, you'll find a lot of delightfully entertaining stuff.  As a matter of fact, PBS just aired a program about the people that make and / or wear the character costumes. I bet it's streaming on their website!

Cosplay, originally a Japanese term describing those who became the Manga (Japanese comics) and Video Game Characters, is not restricted to Fancy Dress Parties or Halloween--

--but can happen any time!  In fact, one can even experience Premature Cosplay!

So, if you're aware of this phenomena, it can prevent problems.

Although you don't necessarily have to explain to your daughter why you're borrowing her school uniform.

(That's the original inked drawing from a WolfieToon you've probably seen a lot.  Notice how I had my Tweedy Dad in a cool bow-tie six years before Matt Smith became Doctor Who!  Ha!)

(Sorry, Doctor Who-Ha is an entirely different program.)

Now, when choosing these cartoons, I made a distinction between my characters dressing up as characters and real characters.

For instance, this is the first pencil sketch of the real Big Little Red Riding Hood out in the woods

--and this is the real Princess's Whipping Girl, thoroughly enjoying her work.

But the couple at the top of the page are in costume, as are the two below.

The difference is, the former are appearing in public, at a convention, and the latter are performing in private.  Or they were until their hostess blundered in.

Well, blow me down!!

More Wolfie Beach Fun: Original Art!

There's a Revealing Detail from one of the latest WolfieToons at "DISCIPLINE & DESIRE!"

I thought it might be fun to show you some of the original black-and-white art for other "D&D" beach-themed cartoons!

The beach party almost doesn't need the lettering and gag!  (But just so you know, he's singing, "Wild Thing!  I'll make your butt sting!")  The next one, though, is kinda bare without more:

So:

For some reason this particular gag has been a favorite of cartoonists for a long time;  here is my first pencil sketch for it.

Then the inked version, which-- perhaps appropriately enough-- has been slightly water-damaged.

And now, the finished cartoon:

Enjoy the rest of your summer!!

The Imp Anthem!

From the 1930 movie "Follow Through," Ms Zelma O'Neal (no relation) sings the Imp Anthem-- "I Want To Be Bad!"

Of course, we all know that, Now as Then, such Naughty Impulses must be properly addressed!

Especially is your Imp is improperly dressed.

No, no, no, not like that at all!  That's always good.  I mean, like wearing girdles during a spanking:

(And you know she did that on purpose, girdles are really hard to find these days!!)

Or like stealing your fella's favorite T-shirt and then getting it all stretched out of shape.

Or breaking Tops' Toys

Or, for that matter, breaking Tops.

Or carelessly wearing very expensive jewelry to Pottery Class.

Or spying on the neighbors like Gladys Kravitz..

Or sneaking off for a snooze when you're supposed to be doing outdoor chores.

Or cutting off the tops of Van Johnson's socks and trying to make him believe you're too young to know that was wrong.

So-- you Imps had better play your cards right

Or the Gobble-uns Wolfies'll git ya

Hey, it's Back-To-School and Football Season!!

Well, OK, that may mean more to some people than to others.

But even if you're not a Fan, there's a bright side to everything!

Sometimes a VERY bright side!

Here's a topical WolfieToon  from "DISCIPLINE & DESIRE!"

So, spanking of, er, I mean, speaking of Backfield-To-School and Football, if you've never seen a Marx Brothers movie, I highly recommend "Horse Feathers."

If you have seen it, pop it in or call it up and watch it again.  Your day will improve exponentially.

What reminded me of that movie was a cheerleader picture I ran across that demanded I steal one of Groucho's "Horse Feathers" lines.

So I did.

Just remember, you can't-a come inna here unless you say, "Swordfish!"
